3316 Skidaway Rd - Savannah

(912) 354-7240

This historic location was the first restaurant Carey Hilliard opened in 1960. At age 13, shortly after his mother died, Carey hitch-hiked from Jesup, GA to Savannah for a new beginning. He began working at American Cyanamid on the Savannah river. Discontent, he tried again at the restaurant business. Upon taking over the closed National Root Beer stand, at this location, Carey and his wife-Kathleen served forty people their opening day. Drive-In Diners were in their “hay-day” at this time. Customers driving by in their classic 1950’s and ‘60s cars were lured in by the sensational smell of hickory smoked Barbecue. The smoke (like a taunting dinner bell) rose above the restaurant whisping and whirling down Sunset Drive. It smelt like a summer’s day.

Open Daily: 11am to Midnight

8410 Waters Ave - Savannah

(912) 355-2468

Opened in 1971, Carey built this restaurant with ample inside seating, but also included the “Drive-In” curb that he inherited in the Skidaway location. Here, the layout featured a mix of booths and tables inside. The half-moon booths filling up the right side of the restaurant still remain nostalgic today! Most people don’t know that above the store Carey built a small office and apartment that’s accessible up a hidden stairway in the bus hall. If you park behind the store and look up to the roof, over the back room, you can see the apartment window! It’s now used to store Christmas decorations.

514 Hwy 80 W. - Savannah

(912) 964-5671

Opening in 1974, this was the first location on Savannah’s West Side, in Garden City. Situated under the shadow of the Savannah Port on the Savannah River, surely made it convenient for people working in the industrial area to grab a quick bite to eat, or even better, a to-go! Keeping with tradition, the exterior was clad in timeless “Savannah Grey Brick.” The foyer is large, with a grand chandelier hanging high above in an alcove, just inside the front doors. A huge “Carey Hilliard’s” neon sign was installed out front lighting up C-A-R-E-Y to distinguish this “Hilliard’s” from Carey’s brothers’ restaurants, Bill Hilliard’s and Dick Hilliard’s.

11111 Abercorn St - Savannah

(912) 925-3225

In 1976, Carey opened a location on Abercorn St. on the South Side of Savannah. At this time, the rural area was a farm field, and Abercorn St. ended where the Savannah Mall is now. The tall booths provide intimate privacy for inside diners. It is rumored that the not-so faithful husbands dined their mistresses here because of the excellent privacy the tall booths provided. Behind the restaurant, Carey built a Banquet Hall, then added on with 2-story Office building in front. The Office building was rumored to house a hot-tub and weight room where Carey would spend his time after working long hours in the Office.

5350 Augusta Rd. (HWY 21) - Savannah

(912) 963-0060

In 1996, “Hilliard’s” opened this location near Savannah’s Airport in Garden City. The restaurant was built larger than previous stores, but still had all the familiar traditional Carey Hilliard’s furnishings. The expansive lobby featured a huge chandelier. The “down-home” décor made the restaurant feel warm and cozy, the booths added a “diner” feel, and the southern seafood completed the sensation.

198 Pooler Pkwy - Pooler

(912) 330-0700

Opened in 2004, in the Home-Depot and Walmart Super Center parking lot, the Pooler location, unbeknownst to many, would become the busiest, most award-winning Carey Hilliard’s restaurant. Since opening, the area has seen expansive growth and continues to add restaurants, retail, and residents. Located just off I-95, on exit 104, it is only minutes from the Savannah Airport. The inside features warm cherry-red walnut wood paneling and booths. Recently painted on the inside, the foyer is now a nautical blue, and the remainder a bright, inviting yellow. The store is filled with local artwork and prints, mainly of coastal scenes like shrimping, marsh, and Tybee. We enjoy seeing many of our travel friends at this location, from South Georgia, Florida, and South Carolina.
